This Levin acoustic arrived in a very sorry state. A right handed guitar, it had been strung as a ‘lefty’ for 40 years or more – the frets were worn out, the fingerboard was lifting, the machineheads were useless, the bridge was split, and a ‘repair’ had been done on the body with a piece of plywood (30 odd years old) to name but a few issues. This guitar needed some serious TLC.
And wouldn't you know it, in best jigsaw tradition the last piece is missing! Successfully filled. All that remains now is for the final cosmetic touch up -arguably the hardest part of the job.
Brushed first with a close matching bronze enamel courtesy of Homebase . . .
And finally sponged down with some black spirit dye. I know Ive made it sound like a dib and a dash and its done but matching finishes is no easy task - one of the greatest thing that only experience teaches is knowing when to stop!

The 30 year old ply wood removed, repairs were done to the internal bracing.
A new piece of spruce is cut and shaped to fit before being glued and clamped in place.
The fret slots were cleaned and the fingerboard was prepared before the re fret, with premium quality fretwire.
A new bridge was fashioned from an ebony blank and the intonation was set for left handed – there are some issues here due to internal bracing differences but this had been strung for a left handed player for 40 years anyway and, more importantly, that’s what the customer wanted.
