One could wonder why both manufacturers and repairers recommend servicing every 12 to 18 months – that is until you strip down the instrument to reveal the heavy build up on pads, the rusted springs and the rest! This customer was astounded at how much easier to play this saxophone was after it\'s service, and how much better it sounded!
Removal of a few keys immediately shows the need for servicing. Hard leather produces a bad seal, resulting in leaks. Residue builds up on the pads and produces sticky pads and at worse, more leaks. Worn or torn leather, result - leaks. All pads should give a good airtight seal over the tone hole.
Removal of the upper palm keys shows a heavy build up of gunge and gunk in and around the toneholes - this isn't going to help the intonation on top of all the other issues we've already mentioned.
More gunge and gunk! One major cause of a sticky G# key - spot the nice green residue on the tonehole surface. Take a look at the springs here too - a liberal coating of fluff and plenty of rust.
What a difference! Body, bore, toneholes and springs all cleaned and good as new.
This is a rod screw - there are a number of these on the saxophone top and bottom stacks and a number of side keys. I always give these and the rod hinges a good clean and polish - you don't see them when the instrument has been re-assembled but it has a huge effect on the responsiveness and 'feel' of the keywork - a silky smooth and silent action is the goal.
